Abstract

Breastfeeding mothers often encounter various challenges during the lactation process, such as low breast milk production due to inadequate nutritional intake, work-related fatigue, and psychological stress that may affect lactation hormones. One potential approach to address these issues is the provision of supplementary foods made from katuk leaves and catfish, processed into nutrient-dense nuggets. This study aims to analyze the effect of consuming catfish nuggets enriched with katuk leaf extract on increasing breast milk production among breastfeeding mothers. The study employed a descriptive design with a case study approach. Samples were selected using a non-probability sampling technique involving three breastfeeding mothers with infants aged 0–6 months. Research instruments included observation and interviews. The findings showed an increase in breast milk volume after a two-week intervention, with the average milk volume rising from 90–110 ml before treatment to 120–140 ml after consuming katuk leaf–catfish nuggets. The phytochemical components in katuk leaves and the animal protein in catfish are presumed to stimulate prolactin and oxytocin hormones, thereby enhancing milk secretion. In conclusion, the consumption of catfish nuggets supplemented with katuk leaves can improve breast milk production in breastfeeding mothers. It is recommended that breastfeeding mothers utilize locally sourced food innovations as natural nutritional support to enhance the success of exclusive breastfeeding.
